Progress on the Dormer!

Steve and his crew have been working tirelessly for the last two weeks on our 3rd floor dormer. The plan was to start August 5th, but due to permitting problems (see earlier post) Steve started on the 12th. This means that our timeline has been push even tighter, as we want to have everything "dirty" done by the end of August. It looks like some of the finish work will stretch on further, but it is possible that we'll actually have drywall up and sanded by August 31. Hopefully nothing holds us back!

To give everyone an idea of where we started, this is what the upstairs looked like (minus the carpet). You can see how tight everything is!

The first few days were all about demolition. Steve cut a hole in the roof so that he could put a chute down to his trailer, where he was furiously hauling away stuff. You can see that the place really started to open up as they gutted the interior.

The roof wasn't supposed to have insulation in it, but the guys I paid to put insulation in the other side of the roof apparently put it in the entire attic! If we hadn't been planning on doing the dormer we would have gotten a screaming deal. As it is, it caused a HUGE mess in the house, in the yard, on the street......etc..when the took it all apart.

Things got pretty airy on day 4, when they removed ALL supports for the dormer side of the house. The roof is currently held up by the center wall, usually which doesn't have any weight on it.

The first week ended with the rough frame for the square part of the dormer. It made the place look HUGE in comparison to where we started. I'm not sure the pictures do it justice, but we were really happy about it.

The dormer takes shape
The second week progressed quickly, with us making several decisions that actually changed the layout of the dormer to allow for more light and a little "reading nook". You can see the layout start to take shape as the work progressed.

Our house has a LARGE tumor!

Bathroom on the left, closet at the far end
We have a window in the stairwell! We are very excited for the extra light.

All in all, it has come a long way. The progress seems to come in spurts, but both the plumber and the electrician have come to take a look and are supposed to start work early next week, hopefully finishing by Wednesday. This should allow Steve to get everything insulated later in the week and drywall up shortly after!

This will bring you to the overall folder where we are putting photos, grouped by the construction day we took them on (1-5 = week 1, 6-10 = week 2). Click on a folder and you should be able to see the pictures. Click on a picture to make it bigger. We didn't take pictures every day, so don't worry about the fact that there aren't folders for every day.
