Starting a Garage

Caroline and I have been silent for the past few...months! Since then, we have been doing a lot on the house, including finishing the upstairs apartment and starting to build the garage. We haven't uploaded the pictures of the finished apartment, but we do have pictures up from the garage.

Earlier in the summer we demolished the shed in the back yard, removed the deck, and took up the asphalt. We figure that we hauled around four tons of asphalt that weekend! It was a lot of work, but it really opened up the back yard and gave us hope that the garage would actually fit.

Once the area was clear, we could start digging the foundation. Luckily, Caroline convinced me to contract out the foundation work, so I wasn't doing the digging myself. This turned out to be a very smart idea, as we had a lot of work still to do on the house during the time I had planned out to dig and pour the foundation.

The hole in the ground from the foundation was a little scary, but it was extra big so the crew could get down inside it. The foundation was not without trouble, but it was finally finished! It looked pretty good (though we found out later that some of the walls were far from straight).  While the contractor we hired was working on the foundation, Caroline and I (and my father) finished off the 2nd floor apartment for the new renters coming in September 1 (lots of odds and ends, painting, and cleaning).

With the foundation laid and backfilled, I was able to test to see if a car would fit. Luckily, Caroline's car fit without trouble! This was a relief. It didn't require any sort of adjusting, and I didn't try very hard to turn the corner early. It looks like our planning paid off!

With the foundation laid and ready to go, Caroline, Matt, my parents and I started laying the concrete block. This was hard work! We were all quite sore afterwards, especially me who laid a lot of the block. We figured that we lifted and placed around 4 tons this weekend!

I don't have a final picture for the weekend, but I am sure one will come soon. Until then, check out all of the pictures!
