Apples!

This past weekend David and I decided to take it easy on Saturday since we (or more accurately, David) have spent the last three weekends working on the garage. After sleeping in and having a delicious breakfast of cheesy scrambled eggs and yogurt we headed out to pick apples at Brooksby Farm in Peabody. We filled a 1 peck bag with a variety of apples (we aren't even really sure what kinds because we didn't see any signs labeling the trees) and then had some apple cider and cider donuts for lunch.

This picture does a great job showing off how photogenic we both are...

...and this one highlights our skills with camera placement.

Later that night we made an apple pie after dinner. As is typical, David and I managed to eat half a pies worth of pie dough during the construction process. Luckily we still had enough dough to make a delicious crust! We both ate more than our fair share of pie the remainder of the weekend, but it tasted amazing. To think that I never even used to like pie crust! I remember as a kid how at Thanksgiving I used to eat the pumpkin filling out of the pie shell, and then pass the crust along to any willing customer.

Tonight I used about half of our remaining apples to try my hand at the apple sauce my mom used to make when I was a kid, from a recipe I believe originated with my great-grandmother. Luckily for me, the applesauce was a success!

Cooking the apples

Straining the apples (is that what that hooja-ma-whatsit is technically doing?)

The finished product!
