I have been karting at a local track since the beginning of the summer, and have had trouble finishing races. I've blown my motor twice and had various other problems that have prevented me from getting a steady run going. I'd finished fourth in my class after qualifying 2nd two races ago, and then promptly stuck a piston in the last race during a practice session. After doing and EXTENSIVE break in session on Saturday, I was ready for the race today. I qualified 2nd in my class even though it was misting slightly. The track seemed to have a decent amount of grip even with the dampness. I finished second in the pre-final (this is really just the first of the two races) and made some adjustments for the final, hoping to challenge for the win.
However, at the last minute it started to mist heavier. There wasn't any standing water, but it looked like it might get slick out. I made a last minute rear axle adjustment and headed out to the grid. I was 2nd in my class but had two masters starting in front of me. The masters class was racing with the seniors because we only had about 12 people total.
The warm up lap was anything but warm, with it actually starting to rain. Everyone had started on slick tires, which meant we had absolutely NO grip. We tried to get a little warmth in our tires, but it was for naught and the race started with everyone on cold tires.
I managed to pass a masters kart in the first corner, and had decent traction, but was hit from behind and spun. I watched the field pass me as I got the kart started again. I got things going and managed to work my way through the field to finish first overall! Attrition helped me, as staying on the track was difficult at times. Check out my video to see what it was like (thanks to Caroline's awesome GoPro gift)!
